January’s Growth

January’s Growth

December had very few cold days which afforded me lots of opportunities to watch the snow peas, broccoli, carrots, beets, swiss chard, and the strawberries take off because even though it wasn’t cold, it was cool and January has had above-average rainfall.  As a matter of fact, we had a storm last night that I somehow slept soundly through.  I never sleep through storms.  I love rain, thunder and lightning so I must have been dreaming of my urban farm and playing in dirt so deeply I didn’t even hear it!

Who has sunflowers blooming in January!?  Only here in wonderful San Antonio, TX~!

Every evening before dusk, I let the chickens out to roam the yard and clean up bugs, do a little fertilizing and just run!  They are very happy chickens.  Unfortunately, sweet Winston must watch from the back door, all the while, I’m sure, he’s dreaming of eating their waste!  GROSS!!!

Notice how GREEN the grass, little that I have, is?  Amazing.  Why can’t it grow all over the yard for the entire year?

Things are revving up for the spring with February and warmer temps sweeping in this weekend.  Rain is in the forecast again for Thursday, so tomorrow I’m planting flower seeds…thousands of them.  I got them from the Dollar Store and @ 4/$1.00 and a big box of 5,000 seeds for $2.99, so why wouldn’t I give them a chance!  The brand is American Seeds, but they are distributed by the ‘Plantation Products’ website.  If even a third of them grow, it will have been worth the money!

There’s much to do in the garden, as always, but to me, it isn’t work.  It’s healing, joy, and life.

Stay tuned as I prepare for the third annual San Antonio Chicken Coop tour!  I didn’t host our coop last year and I can’t remember why, but this year, there will be so much growth, baby chicks and the grands are here, so I have help!

Oh, ya.  I want to share how my six-year-old grandson told me this morning that he is saving his money to buy a farm!  Thought I was gonna jump out of my skin!  Multi-generational farming is my dream.  I’ve been devouring Joel Salatin’s book, ‘The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs’ and with every page, my passion to care for God’s earth, his creation and his gifts has grown.  That book, coupled with the documentary, ‘Food Inc.’, that I downloaded from the library has inspired, convicted and my paradigm is shifting.  Much to be done!

May February bring bouquets of flowers.
